"Taihu Lake lotus"! Wanhao space structure helps Wuxi Olympic Sports Industry Center project

Wuxi Olympic Sports Industry Center Project is located in the central area of Wuxi Economic Development Zone, Jiangsu Province, facing Taihu Lake, close to Gonghu Bay and Shangxian River "double wetlands", with a unique natural environment. It covers an area of about 49,900 square meters, with a total construction area of 63,500 square meters.

Design concept

The design is inspired by organically evolved structures in nature, where the main structural elements are transformed into a fine lightweight system. At the centre of the complex, between and above the podium buildings, gmp and WES created spacious public open Spaces that embody and continue the theme of the Wetland Park in an organic form.

The landscape design continues and integrates the natural river channel connected from the adjacent ecological wetlands on the west and south sides, connecting the storage ponds and natural dikes in the green area, preventing flood and waterlogging, and creating a pleasant microclimate. gmp worked with ARUP to come up with the sponge city and overall sustainability concept to meet the requirements of low carbon development in the region. The overall energy saving concept includes the optimization of the layout from the perspective of solar and wind energy, centralized energy centers, geothermal energy and energy production, and the development of an actionable carbon reduction roadmap, aiming to make the project a benchmark for sustainable development in the Yangtze River Delta.

Stadium membrane structure

The stadium adopts the spoke cable membrane structure system, wherein the membrane structure is composed of ETFE air pillow structure in the inner ring of the roof, PTFE membrane structure in the outer ring of the roof and PTFE membrane structure in the facade.

Among them, the roof ETFE air pillow was further designed and installed by Wanhao Space structure, and the projected area of ETFE air pillow is about 20,000 square meters.

Wuxi new landmark

The project is positioned as the Yangtze River Delta International Competitive Event Center, the Green and low-carbon Travel Center around Taihu Lake, the Suxichang Vitality Rejuvenation Performing Arts Center and the Wuxi Modern Fashion and Sports Center. After completion, it will be integrated with the surrounding wetlands and lake scenery, and become a highly recognizable landmark building complex of Taihu New City and a new landmark building of Wuxi City. It is of great significance to improve the level of sports facilities in Wuxi City, to host large-scale events, to promote the development of sports industry and to show urban culture.
