During the 2020 Bangkok design week, "safe house" was set up in front of the post office building. As a temporary building intervention site, it aims to purify the air and provide a comfortable place for people. At the same time, it aims to improve people's understanding of air pollution, a key social problem.
Inspired by the concept of "cloud", the exhibition hall is designed as an organic form with a sense of future. It creates a fresh space atmosphere, and forms a pleasant microclimate through the combination of vegetation coverage and engineering technology.
In order to maintain a good air condition inside the building, air quality is an element that needs careful control. Firstly, the hot and dirty air is sucked into the room by the fan and passes through rows of trees and shrubs, so that the dust particles are absorbed; The vegetation covered on the ground can also absorb toxic substances. Then, the preliminarily filtered air flows through the dust filter plate and cooling plate, and finally forms pure air. In addition, providing a comfortable environment is also an important issue. Therefore, safe house adopts various technologies to maintain its internal temperature of 22-29 degrees Celsius to adapt to Thailand's tropical climate.
These technologies include: using fans to release heat and generate airflow; Wrap the membrane material around the building to obtain the indoor light with diffuse and blurred effect, which is very friendly to our eyes; Humidifier shall be used to maintain indoor humidity level of 50-70%. In addition, the natural smell of plants and experimental music - composed of sounds similar to nature (such as micro wind, water and bird singing) - are also used to provide a soothing and gentle experience. These methods can be further applied to solve the problem of air pollution in other types of design.
In conclusion, safe house can be seen as a starting point for reaping these benefits from natural species and technological progress - it can revitalize Bangkok and become a sustainable city where every resident can take a deep breath.
