This building is a poetic representation of the “Nest of Rebirth.” The ETFE membrane covering the steel roof structure creates the image of a massive nest, appearing light and translucent. Inside, elliptical exhibition halls, resembling bird eggs, are arranged in a staggered pattern, resembling the new life being nurtured within the nest. Together, they form an exhibition space that explores the themes of life and the future.

The water from the ponds surrounding the exhibition hall is diverted to the roof membrane through a circulating filtration system. From there, it flows slowly along the surface of the ETFE membrane structure, creating a dynamic water curtain. This ingenious structural design complements the circular cultivation system located next to the hall, which symbolizes the cycle of life. Together, they embody the philosophical concept of “eternal reincarnation” and combine it with modern technology, making this feature one of the most fascinating highlights of the exhibition hall.

This project employs a computational design approach, constructing complex membrane structures for roofs by piecing together spherical segments of varying radii. This geometric approach facilitates the fitting of the membrane material to the space frame structure. In addition, the water curtain effect and environmental simulations were achieved using three-dimensional models.

As architectural symbols, the Osaka Medical and Healthcare Center perfectly embodies the theme of “REBORN,” heralding a future where life, sustainability, and innovation shine together.
