The membrane steel structure project of the ASEAN Specialty Commodity Gathering Center is located at No. 23 Lihua Road, Liangqing District, Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China. The project uses 260 tons of steel and has a unfolded area of 3500 square meters for PTFE membrane structure and 1500 square meters for ETFE membrane structure. This project adopts an unconventional approach, designing an inverted umbrella shaped structure below the membrane roof, and looking up through the spatial structure to see the membrane. The overall visual experience is rich, and the spatial texture effect is obvious.
This project is a cross-border economic exchange platform constructed by the China ASEAN Characteristic Commodity Gathering Center with the ASEAN Expo as the main theme. The owner is a well-known developer in Singapore, who has high requirements and opinions on project quality and craftsmanship. This design and construction is the first of its kind in inverted umbrella membrane structures and can be promoted and applied in landscape canopy projects.
PTFE, known as Poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene, is a synthetic polymer renowned for its remarkable properties. Discovered in 1938, PTFE is often referred to as “plastic king” due to its exceptional chemical resistance, low friction, and wide temperature range (-80°C to 260°C). It is nearly inert to most chemicals, making it ideal for applications in harsh environments. PTFE is also highly durable, with excellent electrical insulation properties and a very low coefficient of friction. These characteristics make it widely used in industries such as aerospace, electronics, and automotive for applications like coatings, seals, and electrical insulation.
ETFE, or Ethylene-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene, is a high-performance polymer known for its excellent mechanical strength and durability. Unlike PTFE, ETFE is a copolymer that combines ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene. It offers superior mechanical properties, including higher tensile strength and impact resistance, making it suitable for applications requiring high stress resistance. ETFE is also known for its excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability, and processability. It is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and construction, especially for applications like roofing membranes and high-performance coatings.
