Recently, the temporary building of the Grand Palace in Paris has been completed. The project started in June this year and will replace its functions and hold major activities in the three years of restoration of the Grand Palace in Paris.
The structure of the building is expressive and practical, highlighting the material characteristics of wood. 44 huge arched truss wood structures covered with transparent ETFE membrane structure. The design adopts flexible modular structure and can be assembled within three months; After removal, it can also be reassembled and reused in a variety of combined forms.
However, looking at the details of the photos carefully, the effect of single-layer ETFE membrane structure is not satisfactory. ETFE membrane material is generally used in air pillow membrane structure. When it is used in single-layer tensioned membrane structure, due to the low strength of ETFE membrane material, it is necessary to add membrane surface reinforcing cables, and the spacing of cables is relatively dense.
However, due to the huge difference in the deformation capacity of cable, cable sleeve and membrane materials, if the design details are not handled well, the deformation during tensioning is very uncoordinated, and the final installation effect will be unsatisfactory.
Therefore, the design and construction method of PVC and PTFE tensioned membrane structure cannot be simply applied to single-layer ETFE.
